CityLink and safety
The CityLink control room constantly monitors both tunnels and the rest of the tollway through a number of safety systems and our rapid-response teams are always ready to roll. On occasion, for example at times of high traffic volume on arterial roads like the West Gate Freeway, we need to reduce the speed limit in the tunnels to ensure driver safety.

It can be frustrating to see a lane not being used when you’re stuck in traffic. However, as a precaution we keep a lane available to allow emergency vehicles access from both directions.
Advanced safety systems have been incorporated in the CityLink tunnels.
Pacemakers
The electronic tolling equipment meets international standards and also complies with Australian Standards and will not interfere with pacemakers or any other electrical equipment. The microwave signal from the tolling equipment is tiny and operates on a different frequency from these devices.
