Southern Link Milestones

The Monash-CityLink-West Gate (M1) upgrade includes the construction of extra lanes to help ease congestion and a coordinated freeway management system to manage the flow and entry of vehicles on the freeway.

Current work

Early 2011

Final asphalting on the 4th lane inbound section of CityLink will be completed at night in January 2011 to minimise disruption. West Gate Bridge strengthening and an additional lane in both directions will be completed to improve the flow of traffic from and to the Western Suburbs.

2007 September	Construction begins
2009 October 3rd	Power Street Entry to the Burnley Tunnel closes so drivers now access Burnley Tunnel from City Road. West Gate Freeway Westbound works are complete, reducing dangerous merging between the Domain Tunnel and the Bolte Bridge by dedicating lanes to specific destinations. New West Gate Freeway exit to Bolte Bridge and Montague exit ramp are opened, reducing the need to close a lane in the Domain Tunnel due to congestion.
2009 October 10th	West Gate Freeway Eastbound complete Dedicated ramp opens for Burnley Tunnel bound traffic. New Kings Way exit ramp opened for traffic heading from the Bolte Bridge or West Gate Freeway to Kings Way, reducing the dangerous weaving and merging by motorists coming from West Gate Freeway.
2009 December 11th	Monash Section completed Additional lane added between Toorak Road and Heatherton Road inbound and outbound to increase the capacity of the carriageway. CityLink Outbound completed. Additional 4th lane of the Southern Link section opened between Burnley Tunnel and Toorak Road, increasing the capacity of the road, increasing speeds in peak periods and reducing travel times.
2010 February - March	Ramp Metering activated at many sites along corridor to regulate motorists entering the freeway to ensure a smooth flow of traffic.
2010 June 10th	CityLink inbound 4th lane opened between Domain Tunnel and Mary Street (approx. 600m), making it easier for motorists to access Punt Road and the city from the Eastern Suburbs. Fourth (4th) lane remains closed between Burke Road and Mary Street to facilitate bridgeworks under the roadway between Toorak Road and Cremorne.
2010 August 21st	3rd lane into the Burnley Tunnel from the West Gate Freeway is operational, for the first time since CityLink opened. Provides extra capacity to ease congestion on the West Gate Freeway approaching the Burnley Tunnel, particularly during the evening peak.
2010 October 3rd	CityLink opens additional 4th lane inbound from High Street to Mary Street, providing additional capacity and relieving congestion in peak periods, increasing speeds in peak times and reducing travel times.
