The changes to the West Gate Freeway are part of the $1.39 billion M1 Upgrade to widen one of the State’s busiest corridors from the West Gate Bridge and the South Gippsland Highway. For drivers to get the full benefit of these changes, you will need to alter the way you drive.
Dedicated Exit Lanes are another important component of the M1 Upgrade. These ‘separation by destination’ lanes keep you moving towards your exit, reducing the need for merging and weaving.
Driving on the new M1 means you will need to:
1. Plan your journey.
2. Look out for the new signs to direct you to your exit lane.
3. Know your destination exit and choose your lane early.
4. If you miss your exit continue on the freeway, take the next exit and return.
We still have a lot of work to complete on the M1 Upgrade. It’s all part of the Victorian Government’s ongoing Transport Plan to ease congestion and provide a safer, more reliable journey for Melbournians moving forward.
