The Monash-CityLink-West Gate upgrade project involves:
  • widening sections of the freeways and CityLink between Williamstown and Dandenong,
  • improving entry/exit points,
  • introducing a new intelligent freeway management system from Werribee to Narre Warren.

The West Gate Freeway section of the upgrade will consist of works between the western end of the CityLink tunnels and the West Gate Bridge, covering approximately 6km of freeway alignment.  At project completion, there will be an extra lane for motorists in each direction on the Monash Freeway and Southern Link.

New construction work commencing mid-May 2008 includes dismantling and reconfiguring the Montague Street on-ramp.  This is expected to improve safety by reducing the need for motorist to merge and weave onto the West Gate Freeway.

Temporary traffic changes are required to complete these improvements and this includes closing the Montague Street city-bound on-ramp.  During the ramp’s closure, an additional freeway lane to Kings Way will be added.

The Montague Street city-bound on-ramp will be closed from the evening of Sunday 18 May 2008, for approximately 18 months.

While the Montague Street freeway on-ramp is closed, there will be signed detour route to CityLink via Normanby Road > Clarendon Street > City Road and Power Street.  Motorists can continue along Power Street and via Sturt Street to access Kings Way.
